LES GIRLS, VERS 1928
'LES GIRLS', A POLYCHROME PATINATED AND SILVERED BRONZE AND IVORY SCULPTURE ON AN ILLUMINATING BROWN ONYX BASE BY DEMETRE CHIPARUS, CIRCA 1928. SIGNED
*Certification Available on request.
Chiparus’ masterwork, his five figure version of Les Girls, is known in an extremely limited edition and in various colour combinations. Also edited as a single figure and a three girl group, the ambitious five figure version allowed Chiparus to draw on subtle differences to evoke the elaborate costumes of Léon Bakst and the Ballet Russes.
The present lot is the only documented multi-coloured example with the dancer’s richly jewelled costumes depicted in differing shades. Two other versions are known with a dark brown/purple patina and another where the costumes are green with gold details. The model reproduced in the pages of the Lehmann and Etling catalogues, illustrated only in black and white, is raised on a veined black marble and onyx base, which suggests that it could be another version with green patina.
